I’d describe my style as clean and minimal. Serene and ordered.
Bio
A native of South Africa, Tandi and her family made the USA home in 2001. Her experience as a graphic designer as well as many architectural and interior design projects, led her to explore and expand her creative expression naturally in the visual arts.
Her love of minimalism and mid-century modern design and sculpture inspires playful, yet sophisticated, pieces that feel timeless.
As a self-taught painter, she displays a strong understanding of geometric structure. Her art’s expressionism takes its inspiration from nature and landscape, the commonplace and the abstract. Broad vistas and horizontal plains in her Retroscapes offer an atmosphere of stillness and balance, while her Pebblestacks exhibit a surprising sense of stability through their precarious placement. The organic shapes in her work feel somewhat animated and have a character of their own. The vibrancy of her palette together with the quietude of an uncluttered canvas present something spiritual.
Over the past two decades, Tandi’s artwork has long enhanced the spaces of private collectors, and is widely recognized within the hospitality, commercial, and domestic decor industries, both nationally and internationally.
When not in her studio painting, she’s on the beach–sometimes with sketchbook in hand, but often in solitude in quiet contemplation–being present in the beauty of this magnificent planet.
A passion for culinary arts also compliments Tandi’s expressive life. She currently lives in Carlsbad, CA with her artist and graphic designer husband, Marcel, and Bengal cat, Aloe.
Artist Statement
“In a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe.”
My art has evolved over the past two decades in my own search for balance and stillness. I take my inspiration from my love of nature, and my inner abstract world. I’m all about bringing a sense of calm and serenity in a chaotic world through my life and art.
I’m inspired by the "minimal realism" of Modernist Charley Harper, and artists/sculptors, Henry Moore and Eduardo Villa. I search for the essence, more than the likeness of an object, to evoke something deeper. The elements in my paintings are often reduced to their simplest forms.
I find peace in bringing order to my untamed underpainting, through organic shapes with defined edges, and often including horizontal or vertical shapes that make me feel present and grounded. Multiple layers of acrylic glazes, and through processes of additions and subtractions leave faint traces of the canvas' messy history. My brush strokes may form a sheer, linen veil at each layer which again give me sense of calm and stillness with the soft horizontal and vertical strokes. I find the process calming and meditative. The incorporation of faux bois (fake wood) painted in many of my artworks, is my homage to the wonder and beauty of nature close up.
The practice of art making is my sanctuary. I experience great joy when my art becomes a moment where viewers can pause, breathe, and connect with their inner peace.

Random Fun Facts
“To be an artist is to believe in life.”
My mom taught me to draw a 3 dimensional house when I was 4. So my teachers in preschool thought I was some kind of art prodigy.
I’m a big feline fan–small and big!
My nickname when I was very young was Tiger, so my logo makes total sense to me : )
I love black, white, orange and yellow. I wonder why?
I love to cook. Let me know when you’re coming for dinner.
I pretty much only wear black clothes–not to look stealth–but to camouflage all the grease that jumps on my clothes when I cook. I do wear an apron, if you’re wondering.
The clothes in my closet are color-coded. 93% black, 4% grey, 2% white, 1% orange. I gave away my one yellow sweatshirt before I stained it.
I wanted to pursue computer animation as a career after I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit? At the time there were no schools or studios teaching animation in South Africa. I’m not sorry that I pursued graphic design instead.
We were asked to cat-sit a Bengal cat for 2 weeks. She has heart-shaped spots. We’re not giving her back. She stole our hearts.
I was the only student in my high school art class that did sculpture instead of painting. Now I paint on my canvases what I imagine my sculptures could look like.
I won first prize in a drawing competition once. I was 7 years old. It was of a lion made up of many colorful squares. Did I mention I love cats?
